Diabetic Stress-Busting Tips For A Healthier Life

Diabetic Stress-Busting Tips For A Healthier Life

When you suffer from stress it’s hazardous to your health. If you suffer from diabetes, it can aggravate existing conditions and create new problems as well. Here are a few diabetic stress-busting tips for a healthier life.

It’s essential you control your stress levels because stress can cause blood sugars to rise. The higher your levels are, the worse off you’ll be. If you have stress at work, find a way to relieve it. If it’s because you have too much work, try to delegate some of it or adjust deadlines so you can cope better.

Stress can be caused by missing meals. It’s vital you eat healthy food regularly. Most diabetics know that anyway. If you’re going out, take snacks so you’re not caught without food when you’re feeling hungry. A piece of fruit, a small box of sultanas or some crackers can easily be carried with you for when they’re needed.

If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you may not get enough exercise. It’s essential you get at least 30 mins per day and this can be broken up into 3 lots of 10 mins without any problem. A short walk takes 10 mins. It’s the regular exercise that will keep you feeling better as opposed to the occasional walk.

Go outside and get some fresh air. It will clear your head and let the oxygen in, especially if you’ve been cooped up in an air-conditioned office. Take your lunch outside and eat it. Then go for a walk before you return to work. This combines several good activities into one.

Simple relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or quiet meditation can help you reduce the stress levels. Again, go outside or somewhere quiet and just close your eyes and focus on breathing deeply. Shallow breathing won’t help you. You need to really fill those lungs full of air and let it out again. In and out until you feel the stress melt away.

This can be done in 10 mins very easily but too many people overlook it because they don’t think they should sneak away. The truth is that you can’t afford NOT to do it. If you don’t reduce the stress, your sugar levels can rise, as can your blood pressure.

Make sure you get enough rest and sleep every night. You can’t survive for long on 4 hours of sleep. Eventually your body and mind will start to wear out. Rest is just as important as sleep. You should relax in the evening, watch TV, read or do something else soothing until you’re ready for sleep. Then the sleep quality will be better than if you go to bed while your mind is in turmoil.

These are only a few key diabetic stress-busting tips for a healthier life. I will cover more of them in the next article because this is such an important topic.
