Diabetics Need A Healthy Breakfast

When you wake up in the morning, it’s common for your sugar levels to be low. You’ve been sleeping all night and your body has used all the excess sugar and energy. Diabetics need a healthy breakfast to kick-start their day. The energy you get from your meal should enable you to cope with the rigors that the day holds for you.

However, many people don’t think this way and so bad habits creep in. Gulping down a fast cup of coffee as you rush out the door isn’t the smartest idea. Neither is slathering white toast with butter and adding a glass of sugar-rich fruit juice. Forget about the sausages, muffins, croissants, bacon and hash browns as well. You would just be shortening your life span by eating all those things, especially if you did it every day.

There’s nothing wrong with having a treat now and then but you need to realize that it’s a treat and something you have occasionally. Plan a healthy breakfast ahead of time so even if you don’t have much time, you can still eat a healthy meal. Drink a glass of water before each meal to reduce your hunger pangs as well.

Replace the white toast with wholegrain toast and a thin layer of low fat butter, jam or something else you enjoy. Fresh fruit, natural yoghurt and cottage cheese are also healthy options. Only use egg whites if you choose to make an omelet. The yolks contain the cholesterol and fat. If you want cheese, choose a low-fat variety.

The best cereal to eat is oatmeal. Use low-fat milk and sprinkle it with cinnamon to add some taste without the calories. This is a low GI meal so you’ll remain full for a longer period of time. If oatmeal isn’t to your liking, choose another whole wheat cereal and add some fresh berries for taste and a little sweetness but in a healthy way.

Regardless of whether you’re trying to lose weight or not, never miss breakfast. You’ll only feel hungrier later and may not be able to choose a healthy food option at that time. You may be forced to have a meal full of sugar, fat and other unhealthy contents. You may also eat more because you have had to last longer without food.

Raw vegetables are a fantastic snack or meal at any time. They’re quick and easy to prepare. Chop up some carrots or celery, have a bag of mixed vegetables or salad or a piece of fruit as these are all options you can prepare and carry with you for that snack on the run.

Nobody should skip breakfast. It’s worse for diabetics because you need to keep your body in balance to prevent further symptoms from occurring. You’ll have enough energy to face the challenges the day provides and you’ll feel better for having chosen the healthy option.
