Staying Active in Your Car

Staying Active in Your Car

Many people begin and end their work day in the car, driving for what seems like endless miles and hours. Time spent in a car in a sedentary position can literally create aches and pains as well as tension. Feelings of helplessness and exasperation are quite common among commuters. Road rage is likely expressed as the final straw. Road rage occurs when a person’s passion for everything wonderful turns to rage and others hear screams break the relative silence of the morning and then look around to see the smoke and the fume emitting from the car next to them. Everyone knows that someone is going to ‘get it;’ their hope is that it is just not them.

Preparing yourself for your commute is an excellent idea. Besides realizing what the guy or gal in the car next to you might do, you need to know what you will be doing. All of that commuting time seems so wasted. Frustration builds when you realize just how many hours you spend getting to and from work. The end result of having nothing to do in a fast-paced world is likely to result in frustration, exasperation and anger that can either explode or implode. Explode, and you may hurt someone. Implode, and it will kill you over time.

Acceptance is the only remedy to the situation. Accept that it is your choice to go to work. Accept that there are daily traffic jams. Accept that when you have nothing to do except to sit in traffic that it is dangerous to your health.

Create an exercise plan for the car. Keep your muscles in motion. Feel as though you are accomplishing something. You will at least know that you are staying limber and possibly reducing some of those bulges.

Some Valuable Ideas for Your ‘Work-out:’

  • Use a squeeze ball to exercise the joints and muscles of your fingers and hands.
  • Do isometrics as you place your hands together in front of you and allow them to push on each other to the count of thirty. Squeeze the muscles of your gut and your buttocks a chosen length of time.
  • Flex your calf muscles.
  • Exercise your neck by allowing it to ‘bob’ to the right and then to the left. This is good for your neck and also for your eyesight.
  • When sitting for a long time, take a moment and really look at things that you have not allowed yourself to look at in the past. See a sunrise in the morning and possibly a beautiful sunset in the evening.

Exercise your mind, your body and your soul while driving. It is good to find peace in all of the gratitude you feel. Recounting gratitude is certainly an exercise for humility, health and safety as well.
