The Smartest Ways To Control Your Diabetes

If you’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it’s better to control it through diet and exercise if possible. Diet and exercise are the smartest ways to control your diabetes.

If you can’t control it yourself, you’ll end up taking tablets and/or having to inject yourself with insulin and that’s not much fun at all. Imagine carrying around needles and insulin and finding a quiet place to inject yourself while at work, school, uni or out socializing. It can be stressful.

Let’s start with diet. If you’re not aware of the five main food groups, they are:

grains, fruit and vegetables, meats (protein), dairy and fats and sugars. The idea is that you eat balanced meals.

The last group should be the smallest amount in your meals. You do need a small amount of sugars and fats but keep them to a minimum. If you eat healthy, well-balanced meals, you can control your sugar levels, your weight and keep your sugar levels balanced.

You’ll also find you won’t suffer from deficiencies. In an ideal world, you should get all nutrients from your food. If you find this impossible, take supplements to ensure you’re getting everything you need.

Have regular blood tests to ensure you’re not deficient. If you are, take immediate steps to correct the problem. Discuss these problems with your dietician or doctor because they can give you expert advice.

Exercise is the other main area to focus on. In today’s society, people lead more sedentary lives because you can do most things without leaving your desk or sofa. Computers enable you to do your shopping, play games, communicate with others and eliminate the need to get out as often as you should.

Exercise is a crucial part of controlling diabetes. It helps control your weight, improves circulation, boosts your metabolism so you can burn off excess calories and energy so it doesn’t accumulate and makes you feel alive and better than if you simply laze around and don’t exercise.

The word “exercise” shouldn’t be a scary prospect. Many people conjure up images of hours at the gym — on treadmills, lifting weights and other sweaty and exhausting exercises.

This is far from the truth of what exercise can be if you do it right. It should be enjoyable. Walking is the best exercise because you can do it anywhere. Find out the things you enjoy and do them regularly. You’ll get fit and it won‘t feel like exercise.

If you focus on diet and exercise, you may be able to avoid taking any medication for your diabetes and you’ll feel healthier as a result. In the next few articles, I will go into more detail about food and exercise.
