When it comes to losing weight, your beverage consumption can often have a bigger impact than the foods you eat. For example, drinking a lot of soda pop, fruit juice and sweetened tea and coffee can easily add a lot of unnecessary calories to your diet.
Did you know that a 12 ounce can of soda contains 150-200 calories? Even if you drank just ONE can of soda per day, you’d be adding more than 54,000 calories to your diet each year. Since one pound equals 3,500 calories, that adds up to more than 15 pounds gained per year. If you eliminate soda and other sweetened drinks from your diet, you can easily lose that 15 pounds even if you don’t change anything else in your diet or exercise plan.
If you don’t want to give up flavored drinks altogether, consider making these small changes that can have a big impact on your calorie intake and let you know how to lose 15 pounds in a month:
You can buy flavored seltzer water in most supermarkets, and most of them are zero calorie, or at least low calorie. You can even make your own by adding one tablespoon of natural fruit juice to an 8 ounce glass of seltzer water. Or squeeze in the juice from a wedge of lemon or lime and a packet of zero calorie sweetener.
Unsweetened tea is a great alternative to juice and soda, especially if you choose one with a mild flavor like green tea, white tea, chamomile, or various herbal teas like peppermint, spearmint, lemon, ginger, etc. If you really need it to be sweetened, add a packet of powdered stevia, or liquid stevia drops.
You can buy powdered and liquid flavor packs to add to water, and many of them have zero calories. However, many of these have artificial sweeteners so it’s a good idea to limit your consumption. (Limit diet sodas for the same reason.)
Many fruit juices have added sugar so they aren’t much better for you than soda, but there are a few brands that don’t add sugar. Even unsweetened juice can have a lot of calories – but you might be able to dilute it so you aren’t drinking as much of it. Try cutting it 50% with water. If that’s still palatable, try cutting it even further to 25% juice and 75% water.
Even if you are a die-hard soda drinker and can’t imagine giving it up, you might be surprised by how easy it really is! It’s just a matter of forming new habits. The first few days you might miss it but within a week or two you likely won’t feel the need to have it anymore.
Reducing your liquid calorie intake is the easiest way for most people to lose 15 pounds in a month.
